How to use plug-ins

    I am completely new to the world of WordPress, I therefore probably am asking a very simple and stupid question.
    When I have uploades and activated a plug-in (in my case Column-matic by Twinpictures) I cannot find how to use this plug-in when I want to create (via the dasboard) a new page with text colums.
    In general, it is not clear to me what happens when you “activate” a plug in: it appears that nothing seems to be affected in theme lay-out you are using at that moment.
    Can anybody tell what I have to do when I wish a plug-in to have an effect on my lay-out?
