We chose Payment Plugins for PayPal WooCommerce because of its excellent reviews, and initially we were very pleased with the decision. Unfortunately, after putting the plugin into production, we experienced significant problems with the PayPal payment flows. Our main requirement was a simple PayPal Smart Button on our Basket page, allowing customers to pay directly through PayPal without having to complete a separate checkout form. Initially, customers clicking the PayPal Smart Button on the Basket page were being redirected to a checkout form. We contacted support about this and were told that the issue had been resolved, and the redirect subsequently disappeared. However, we then experienced further payment problems. One customer attempted to pay approximately $199 using the PayPal card Smart Button. PayPal returned a "Suspected fraud" error and the payment failed. Support explained that PayPal's card Smart Button has its own internal fraud logic and can flag payments more frequently than the standard card gateway. More seriously, another customer attempted to pay approximately $199 through the ordinary PayPal Smart Button on the Basket page. PayPal created multiple orders, but they remained in PAYER_ACTION_REQUIRED status and the customer was unable to complete the purchase. We provided the relevant logs to support and asked specifically whether the changes made to the Basket Smart Button flow could be related to the problem. We did not receive a satisfactory answer to that question. The support team was responsive during much of our communication, but for a payment plugin, responsiveness is only part of the equation. The payment process itself needs to be reliable for customers. After experiencing these problems in production, we have decided to remove the plugin from our site. We recently had an issue with the list of carriers available for our country, and within just a few days, they were able to push a new feature to production that will benefit all users by allowing them to select the destination country and get an updated list of available couriers.
